growth

Fear used to break
in to my house,
destroy all the furniture.
I hid in a cellar.
For a long time,
fear stared through
a window pane.
I avoided eye contact.
Then it grew more
courteous.
It began to knock.
Courage answered
and fear shrank.
Occasionally still, fear rings the doorbell
and runs away
fumbling.
Courage smirks.
Doesn’t even bother looking
at the door anymore.
